Prof. Horst Vogel studied chemistry at the University of Würzburg, Germany, and did his PhD work at the Max-Planck Institute of Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen. In 1994 he became professor for biophysical chemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) where he still is at the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Engineering. His research concentrates on (i) the structure and function of membrane proteins, and (ii) the development of bioanalytical techniques, published in over 200 scientific articles with ~14,000 citations (h-index 64). He was always active transferring his inventions to applications by licensing patents, collaborating with industrial partners and creating several start-up companies. Since 2014, he is a Fellow of the US National Academy of Inventors.
