FAES FARMA, Spain

Dr. Tatiana Suárez Cortés is Head of Research, Development, and Innovation Promotion in  the R&D&I Department at Faes Farma, Spain. She holds a PhD in Biological Sciences – Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, from the Basque Country University.

She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Laboratory Sciences – Biotechnology Program at Thomas Jefferson University (TJU), Philadelphia, USA, studying  ABCR transporter mutations involved in inherited visual diseases. As part of an  interuniversity collaborative project, she also worked as a volunteer researcher at the  University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), Department of Molecular  Biology, New Jersey, USA. Following her postdoctoral fellowship, she assumed the position of Head of the Functional Biotechnology Unit of the Department of Biotechnology at the  GAIKER Technology Center, Spain. She was the founder and scientific director of a  biotechnology company specializing in ophthalmology, diagnostics, biomarkers, PoC  devices, and ophthalmic pharmaceutical product evaluation.

She investigates the effect of active ingredients on ocular surface and tear film  homeostasis. A major area of her work is the involvement of biomarkers in physiological  processes associated with ocular pathologies, focusing on tear protein and peptide  biomarkers in dry eye and other ocular surface diseases. Her work also includes the  development of biomarker-based diagnostic systems and devices. Her research interests  extend to protein and peptide profiling using mass spectrometry, as well as the  development and evaluation of novel ophthalmic formulations.

Dr. Suárez is also involved in various ophthalmology organizations and expert groups and  serves on advisory boards. She was a member of the DEWS II – TFOS (Dry Eye Workshop II – Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society) tear film expert committee. She is a member of the  Spanish Society of Ocular Surface and Cornea (SESOC), the Association for Research in  Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), and the Tear Research Network (TRN). She holds  positions on the boards of several Spanish research centers and clusters, including CIC  bioGUNE (Center for Cooperative Research in Biosciences, Vice President of the Board of  Directors), GAIKER Technology Center (Vice President of the Board of Trustees),  CLUSTER4EYE, LAB SERVICES TECNALIA, BASQUE HEALTH CLUSTER, and MEDTECH &  FARMA MONDRAGON HEALTH. She has supervised a master’s thesis and two doctoral  theses and participates in national and international research projects.
